How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (approx. 400 words)
Product 1: Magazine 200-250 words
Blackout Magazine will be mirror the likes of esquire in the way in which it targets primarily 20-25 year olds. Furthermore the way it will achieve this will be by engaging with techniques such as having -
a text busy front cover
a solitary image of my model
bold font that mirrors the essence of the magazine
The use of text on the front cover will be helpful in enticing an audience due to the way in which I will use short and snappy headlines to attract interest. Similarly to this the use of a bold font will allow for the text to be more easily visible and also fit the theme of the magazine. Usually magazines such as Men's Health, another fitness based lifestyle magazine, the images used of models are stereotypically masculine and therefore in modern society would be viewed as creating 'toxically masculine tropes' with the images showing big bearded men with six-packs who are generically appealing to and aspirational audience. The models used in the Issues will closely mirror these tropes in hopes of conforming with the genre. The cost of the physical magazine is based off of these similar magazines and then placed below average to offer a cheaper alternative to my target audience who do not typically have high incomes.
The contents page of Blackout magazine will conform to similar magazines such as men's health and ESPN which use a handful of images amongst a lot of text to retain the gaze of the reader
Product 2: Online Website 150-200 words
My target audience is primarily 20-25 year old men with the potential for either younger or older males to also be inspired by it. the codes and conventions of my genre are
Big bold font
A lot of colour
A lot of font
Big images of typically stereotypical sportspersons
I intend to break the convention of the images of sports people that are stereotypical as I believe it creates a sense of unease in people that don't look like this participating in such events. However to still appeal to the target audience I intend to use the bold colouring and bold fonts to catch the attention of the target audience. Due to my target audience being 20-25 year old males this means there is alot of other options of magazines sold for this target market. I will base my magazine off of magazines such as GQ and Esquire but predominantly lean to the ideas based for Men's Health. Furthermore my website will convey the idea of an ever changing sports industry, an to benefit in the mental ideology of young athletes or aspiring athletes.
Intention for linking both forms of media
To link my physical magazine to the website I intend to use a weblink at the bottom of the contents page. And to link my website to my physical magazine I intend to place images of the magazine on the website using a second page to convey that weeks issue. Furthermore using similar coulor codes and also fonts allows for the two modes of media to converge and be similar enough to create a brand appeal.
